Gum Springs Park in Shawnee, Kansas
Following extensive renovation work, Gum Springs Park in Shawnee was officially reopened in spring 2024, just in time for its 45th anniversary. The result is a modern, inclusive playground that invites children of all ages and abilities to play together. The playground’s bright colours create a visual sensory experience and spark children’s interest in movement and physical activity.
The centrepiece of the playground is the Lunia L – a climbing structure modelled on a hot-air balloon, featuring a bright orange membrane that rises 10 m into the sky.
Inside, a large spatial net invites children to explore and climb. Using nets, ropes, and rope ladders, they can reach the balloon basket and continue further up into the three-dimensional net.
A low ropes course provides exciting adventures and is particularly suitable for children with visual impairments or for those who prefer to stay close to the ground.
Various net elements lead to a net platform with a slide. A hammock and a so-called Wasp’s Nest invite children to relax.
The Curly combination is aimed at younger children: two platforms of different heights, connected by a suspension bridge, help to develop motor skills and balance. Thanks to the stairs and a ramp, the structure is also accessible to children with limited mobility.
