The Berliner Mesh: A Unique Technique for Creating Large-Scale Net Structures
How can large climbing nets be designed to make the best possible use of space while creating a wide variety of play experiences? The answer is the Berliner Mesh. Developed by us, this innovative technique transforms large-area net structures into organic forms.
What is the Berliner Mesh?
The Berliner Mesh is a specialised construction technique for large-scale climbing nets. By strategically positioning elevated and lowered points throughout the net, an aesthetically pleasing structure is created that maintains consistently high net tension across the entire surface.
What makes this system unique?
- The wave-like structure creates diverse movement opportunities and exciting play experiences.
- Its distinctive organic form turns the net into a striking design feature, making it ideal for bespoke projects.
- A wide range of Add-on Elements encourages climbing, balancing and exploration.
How does the Berliner Mesh work?
The foundation of the system is a flexible 16 mm steel cable coated with polyester, specially developed for the Berliner Mesh concept. The intersections of the net are secured using die-forged aluminium ball connectors that are permanently swaged onto the ropes.
A specially designed egg-shaped clamp, featuring three connection points, allows variable attachment angles to the supporting structure. This makes it easy to adapt the net to different shapes, eliminates potential entrapment points and enhances overall safety.
This unique construction method enables flexible, organic forms that can be tailored to individual layouts and architectural concepts.
Where is the Berliner Mesh used?
Three-Dimensional Spatial Net at Kurpark Bad Dürrenberg
One impressive example is the playground at Kurpark Bad Dürrenberg, where a large three-dimensional spatial net stretches throughout a 12-metre-high play structure, showcasing the versatility of the Berliner Mesh.
Organic Net Structure on Kaheyo
Our latest play structure, Kaheyo, also features the Berliner Mesh. Here, the net is suspended between elegantly curved support posts, creating a visually striking and highly playable structure.
